Kindness through small gestures

There is something about small, spontaneous moments that brings so much joy, moments that leave a mark and stay with you forever.

I remember one time when I was standing at the edge of a busy road, feeling overwhelmed and anxious, finding it very hard to cross the road (I’ve never been good at crossing roads). I stood there for what felt like an eternity, waiting for cars, buses, and bikes to slow down or stop so I could move forward. After about 15 minutes, just as I was feeling utterly defeated, a random stranger—a guy came up beside me and offered to help me cross. Hold my hand helped me to the other side of the road. I was in awe to see that someone noticed me struggling on a very busy road and offered to help. It might not seem like a big gesture, but he chose to be kind in that moment, and it made all the difference. I might not remember his face after a while, but I’ll always remember how he helped me, and that memory will always bring a smile to my face.
The other day, I went to a cafe and there a lot going on my mind. I placed my bag on a chair and went to order, knowing exactly what I wanted. But when I stood in front of the guy at the counter, I froze. No words came out, and I just stood there. He noticed and, with a kind smile, told me to take my time and that he’d wait. He didn’t rush because there were other customers but instead stood patiently while I gathered myself, he even suggested a few things I might like to try, all while being incredibly nice and polite. I know it’s part of their job to be polite, but he could have easily asked me to step aside until I was ready or shown frustration for taking up his time. But he didn’t. And honestly, I have a deep appreciation for people who can calm me down or show patience when my mind feels like it’s in the middle of a storm. They make me feel seen and cared for, even if it's just for a moment.
Very recently I went to have ice cream with a friend and there was this girl eagerly choosing flavors for her parents. She was so excited, explaining which flavors would pair best—like Biscoff with pistachio or English strawberry with something chocolatey. She placed her order while I was still trying to decide, tasting a few options. Then, out of the blue, she asked if she could suggest something. I nodded, and she cheerfully gave me a few recommendations. I chose one, and then she added, “You should always order two scoops of different flavors—it’s basically the same price, and it tastes so much better!” I already knew that, but the way she wanted to tell me was so sweet.
It’s amazing how a complete stranger can be so kind and genuine, expecting nothing in return, just sharing a moment and a bit of joy.
Some people stay with us for a lifetime, not because we’ve known them well or because they are a part of our lives, but because they made you feel something good for a moment when you needed the most. When you're having a bad day, even the smallest gestures can make a big difference. Sometimes, all we really need is a little kindness.
So, if you ever get the chance to brighten someone’s day, take it. Choose kindness. It doesn’t have to be anything big; even a small gesture, like offering a helping hand, can make a difference.
