Are we the generation of exhaustion and boredom?

“You are not tired because you are broken. You are tired because you have been running a race you were never meant to run.”
It feels like everyone is exhausted. Not tired because of lack of sleep, but because of a constant sense of urgency, a constant need to be productive. We are stuck in a loop of performance that no one is really watching, but we still put it out there as if it’s a culturally “cool” thing.

Social media has convinced us that everyone else is hustling harder, traveling, looking better, or living more vibrantly. We push ourselves to keep up, but the race is endless and no one is going to win. We are trying achieve too many things. A long to do list that keeps getting bigger and bigger. And love being busy but the line between exhaustion and busy is blurred. We cannot rest without feeling the guilt of wasting time. We are constantly on a clock. The thing is, we believe exhaustion happens because it’s necessary to achieve our goals. We’ve been taught that being drained, busy, and constantly “on” is just the price of success. But the truth is, it’s not the actual work that’s making us exhausted, it’s the overdoing of everything. We don’t let things simply be. Everything has to be maximized, optimized, turned into proof of effort. That’s where the exhaustion comes from. And in that process, we lose the joy of the life.
The burnout and boredom are real. And instead of sitting with boredom, we’re constantly trying to escape it. We’ve become overstimulated, so desperate to do something all the time. We’re always on our phones, and we’ve don’t know how to sit with nothing, without our phone, without music, without distraction and just lay low. When we try, guilt creeps in. We start to feel like it’s a waste of time. But boredom is anything but stillness. It’s a very slow process, that you can’t skip but just feel it.
Not everything has to be turned into a to-do list or filtered for social media. Life isn’t meant to be that. What if we stopped trying to fill every second? What if we allowed ourselves to just be and even if that means being bored?
Boredom isn’t a curse, it’s part of being human. It’s the quiet space where have a chance to grow. We don’t need to do more. Maybe what we really need is to feel more. To notice the little things. To do the mundane without rushing. Doing small, ordinary acts are not a waste of time. They’re how we reconnect with ourselves. It’s not about overnight transformations or perfect routines. It’s about listening and pausing long enough to hear what our mind is asking for, what our body is craving. Rest when you need it. Move when you can. Nourish yourself in simple ways.
The truth is, we’re not going to wake up one morning and suddenly feel okay forever. We’re not going to escape exhaustion once and for all. But maybe, in those moments when it feels overwhelming, we can take a small step back. We can breathe. We can remind ourselves that it’s okay not to keep up with everything and everyone.
The era we live in is overwhelming. The pace, the noise, the pressure, it’s a lot. We can choose to step outside of the loop, even briefly. And sometimes, that’s enough to keep us going, not by doing more, but by allowing ourselves to simply be.
